Kevin Gates was in New Orleans born and raised in Baton Rouge in the US state of Louisiana. At the age of 20, he started publishing his mixtapes. After Pick of da Litter (2007) followed a series of other mixtapes before the breakthrough came in 2013 with The Luca Brasi Story.
He was discovered by rappers like Pusha T and Gudda Gudda and received a record deal from Atlantic Records. The mixtape reached a placement in the R&B charts. In the same year, his debut album Stranger Than Fiction was still on the indie label Breadwinners Association, in which, among other things, Wiz Khalifa and Juicy J had participated.
So he made it right in the top 10 of the US rap charts and at number 37 on the official sales charts. A year later he was in the 3rd place on the rap charts with the mixtape By Any Means. Plies and 2 Chainz were represented. More considerable commercial success in 2015 was the successor of his breakthrough mixtape Luca Brasi 2, Although it did not reach new record highs, but kept half a year in the sales charts.
With I Do not Get Tired (together with August Alsina ) he had his first single hit. Another hit on the Hot 100 was Really Really in late 2015. It was a pre-release to the second album Islah, the first on the major label Atlantic, which is named after his eldest daughter and in which no guest musicians were involved. It was released in January 2016 and was No. 1 on the rap albums as well as No. 2 in the official album charts.

Kevin Gates was arrested and imprisoned for the first time at 13; he says in his interviews that he made many trips back to prison. He obtained a degree in psychology while he was behind bars. In his music, Kevin Gates recounts his past and his present life; one learns that he suffered from depression and that he was a heroin addict, up to inject drugs into her sex.

Controversy
On August 30, 2015, a video was released Showing Kevin Gates kicking a woman from his audience during a performance in Lakeland, Florida. The victim filed a complaint in September 2015. The victim, Miranda Dixon, sued the rapper for assault and battery. On October 27, 2016, he was sentenced to 180 days in prison.
