Wendy Williams was born in Asbury Park, New Jersey, daughter of Thomas and Shirley Williams, and sister of Wanda and Tommy. She was raised in Ocean Township, New Jersey in the Wayside community.

She finished high school at Ocean Township High School. From 1982 to 1986, Wendy attended Northeastern University, located in Boston, Massachusetts, where she majored in communication and worked as a DJ for college radio station, WRBB (104.9 FM).
